Brussels (dpa) - The EU Commission has given the green light for the takeover of Zenimax Media by the US software giant Microsoft.

The planned step is unobjectionable in terms of competition law, the commission announced on Monday.

Zenimax is the parent company of Bethesda Softworks and several other game developers.

With its studios, the company is responsible for hit games such as “Doom”, “Fallout” or “The Elder Scrolls” and, according to its own information, has around 2,300 employees.

With the billion-dollar acquisition, Microsoft wants to strengthen its gaming division around the Xbox game console.

The company announced the takeover agreement in September.

Accordingly, Microsoft pays 7.5 billion US dollars (6.4 billion euros) in cash.

Zenimax is headquartered in Washington DC and was founded in 1999.

The company is to continue under the corporate umbrella of Microsoft in its usual structure and with its previous management team.

The US authority SEC had already approved the acquisition before the EU competition authorities, as reported by several media.

Upon request, Microsoft initially did not comment on the decision of the EU Commission.
