Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) highlighted the successes of Rhineland-Palatinate companies in the fight against the corona pandemic during a visit to the Mainz special glass manufacturer Schott.

“A vaccine is worthless if you don't have the packaging.

And that's where Schott comes into play, ”said Dreyer on Monday.

The company is involved in the production of vials for the transport of vaccines.

According to Schott, a very large part of the pharmaceutical companies that either already manufacture or are still researching a corona vaccine are customers of the group.

Schott does not disclose names.

Not far from the Schott headquarters is the headquarters of the Mainz vaccine manufacturer Biontech.

Schott wants to produce bottles for a total of two billion corona vaccination doses this year.

"I assume that we can conclude with a higher amount," said Schott CEO Frank Heinricht.

Dreyer emphasized that in addition to Biontech, Schott and the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, there are a number of companies in Rhineland-Palatinate that are very important in the fight against the pandemic.

“It's wonderful what companies are making history right now,” she said.

With the goal of becoming CO2-neutral by 2030, Schott can count on financial support from the federal government.

The production of special glass is very energy-intensive, in some cases up to 1700 degrees Celsius must be reached in the melting tanks.

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) gave the Mainz hope for funding.

"We encourage you to submit a funding application so that we can support you," she said during the factory visit.
