27 November 2019 The request for a new conviction made by the Public Prosecutor, after the first instance one, for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was accepted by the Porto Alegre Court of Appeal.



The Regional Federal Court of Porto Alegre confirmed the sentence handed down in the first instance, last February, by a single judge from Curitiba for the crimes of corruption and money laundering, in the process known as the 'Atibaia case'.



Lula da Silva is accused of having received as a gift, from various construction companies, the use of a residence in the locality of Atibaia, in the State of Sao Paulo, as compensation for the special treatment given to companies by his government .



The prosecutor, in addition to asking for confirmation of the sentence, also asked for an increase in the sentence imposed on the former president.



Two of the three magistrates who made up the second degree judicial panel immediately rejected the appeals of the defense of Lula then, in the end, the three magistrates of the Regional Federal Court of Porto Alegre, as well as confirming the conviction for corruption and money laundering, have exacerbated the punishment, as requested by the Prosecutor's Office, to the former Brazilian president from 12 years and 6 months to 17 years and 1 month.



Lula de Silva's lawyers called the entire proceedings a "judicial farce".
