Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The number of preliminary investigations into right-wing extremist crimes has increased in the country.

In 2020, 1,652 proceedings were initiated, as can be seen from a response from the Interior Ministry to the SPD, which is available to the German Press Agency.

In 2019 it was 1507, in 2018 it was 1080. Overall, however, the number of right-wing extremist crimes fell in the Corona year - from 1549 cases in 2019 to 1479 cases last year.

In 2020, 35 violent crimes were recorded, in 2019 there were 39.

As of February 8, 2021, a total of 103 proceedings against known accused and 22 proceedings against unknown persons were still pending.

"The number of 125 open preliminary investigations with a right-wing extremist background shows why the establishment of the appropriate public prosecutor's offices is absolutely necessary," said SPD parliamentary group leader Andreas Stoch.

"It is high time that our state acted more defensively when it comes to defending our democracy with all available means."
