Hanover (dpa / lni) - Comprehensive free rapid tests for the coronavirus by doctors, in vaccination centers and pharmacies will initially not be available in Lower Saxony.

The state government will do everything to ensure that citizens can be offered rapid tests, said a government spokeswoman in Hanover.

But neither the federal government nor the state of Lower Saxony had announced nationwide rapid tests for the coming week, and the national test strategy should be implemented gradually by the beginning of April.

There are good discussions with the Chamber of Pharmacists, other partners should be involved.

Corresponding tests are possible with doctors, said a spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health.

The network still has to be expanded.

A pilot project is running at the schools in order to be able to test staff and students once a week before the Easter holidays.

According to the country's new Corona regulation, this is not mandatory.

In addition, lay self-tests were used in the first supermarkets at home - and were out of stock immediately.

The new regulation stipulates that visitors to certain facilities, businesses or events must present a valid PCR or self-test.

If this is not available, those responsible must offer a self-test.

This applies, for example, to so-called body-hugging services such as at the beautician, where a medical mask cannot be worn permanently, for speech therapy treatment, for employees and volunteers before entering retirement and nursing homes and for visitors to homes if the incidence is in of the city or district exceeds 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week.

Companies would therefore have to stock up on rapid tests themselves, said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health.

The ball is currently in the federal field, she emphasized.

The right to a free rapid test per week is based on the new federal test ordinance.
