Dresden (dpa / sn) - For International Women's Day this Monday, Economics Minister Martin Dulig (SPD) recognized the achievements of women in the corona pandemic.

"Especially for many working mothers, the proportion of so-called care work has increased again," he said on Sunday.

"Women shoulder more."

For example, they would sometimes school, look after and cook for their children during the day, run the household and fulfill their professional duties when the children were asleep.

"With all the advantages that home office can bring, we must not overlook this extension of the days and the multiple workload."

At the same time, he pointed out that in Saxony two thirds of women have a job that is subject to social security contributions - that is the highest employment rate in Germany.

In 2019, the employment rate of women rose by 0.8 percentage points to 65.2 percent compared to the previous year, according to the Saxony Employment Agency.

Nationwide, the rate was 57.4 percent.

Nevertheless, equality must continue to be promoted, also because of the often different pay for women and men, criticized the minister.

"Even in industries and professions with a high proportion of women, there is seldom equal pay."

He also called for a fairer division of care work in families.
