The first cases of Covid-19 have just been detected in New Caledonia this Sunday, March 7 and strict containment has just been announced.

Nine people infected with Covid-19 have just been identified in New Caledonia this Sunday, March 7, after the detection the day before of the first indigenous case in the neighboring archipelago of Wallis-and-Futuna.

To break the transmission of the virus before it is too late, Thierry Santa, the president of the government of New Caledonia, and Laurent Prévost, the high commissioner of the republic, have already announced a strict confinement of two weeks of the entire population.
Serious condition
The measure will come into force on the territory, from Monday midnight.
According to the first elements, the patient of Wallis-and-Futuna would have developed symptoms on the archipelago, in mid-February, which therefore means, that he could have been contaminated there at the end of January.
Today in serious condition, the man could soon be evacuated to the hospital in Noumea.
As a precaution, Thierry Santa asked all people who have returned from Wallis-and-Futuna since January 25 to isolate themselves and report themselves by calling 15.
