Oberstdorf (dpa) - The worst World Cup record since 1999 could not prevent the model combiner Eric Frenzel.

The 32-year-old major event specialist was also involved in both German medals at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf and was once again the most reliable performer.

But it did not build on the great triumphs of earlier days.

“I'm basically satisfied with my World Cup,” said Frenzel, radiating just that.

He was satisfied, he didn't seem completely enthusiastic.

Frenzel had a decisive share in silver with the team and bronze in the team sprint with Fabian Rießle.

Since the team sprint was included in the 2013 World Cup program, Frenzel has always been part of the German duo - and he always made it onto the podium.

With two fourth places in the two individual competitions, it was just not enough for the Saxon in the Allgäu.

Before the championships, he had trained a lot at home and had stepped in as a math teacher in homeschooling in his family.

The time with his wife and three children was good for him, he said.

In fact, the balance between hill power and mileage was most likely in his team for the three-time Olympic champion.

"Eric has managed to develop further," said national coach Hermann Weinbuch, praising his World Cup record champion, who had won at least one gold medal at every World Cup between 2011 and 2019.

Weinbuch is impressed that Frenzel, the team elder, and the 30-year-old Rießle are still in the lead.

In a way, however, it also annoys him.

«An Eric or Rießle, what they're doing is amazing.

They still set the tone and lead the team, "said the 60-year-old and added:" Someone from below should also set the tone.

My boys don't get into their slips yet.

There has to be a little more. "

Until then, Weinbuch is happy that he can count on Frenzel.

He definitely wants to be there again at the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.
