Erfurt (dpa / th) - The dispute over the use of body cameras by the Thuringian police goes into the next round.

The internal politician of the CDU state parliamentary group, Raymond Walk, announced on Sunday a legislative initiative of his group in the state parliament.

The aim is to change the Thuringian Police Task Act accordingly.

Two test projects had come to the result that the majority of the police wanted and recognized the technology as an operational tool, he justified the move.

The red-red-green minority coalition, which is dependent on CDU support in state parliament decisions, had previously rejected the use of body cameras by the police and questioned the benefit.

In Walk's opinion, the portable cameras are being accepted by police officers and citizens alike.

Police officers felt more secure on duty and were more careful not to make mistakes themselves.

In addition, video technology could reduce the willingness to attack police officers.

In the budget negotiations, however, Red-Red-Green would have refused the approval of funds for the purchase of body cameras.
