Málaga (AP) - Spanish director Pilar Palomero's debut work “Las Niñas” received the main prize for best film at the award ceremony of the 35th Goya Film Awards in Málaga.

The story of the friendship between two schoolgirls and their rebellion against the conservative atmosphere of their nuns' school and Spanish society in the early 1990s received three more trophies on Saturday evening.

The production won the award for the best screenplay, Palomero (40) was honored as the best young director and the Peruvian camerawoman Daniela Cajías received the award for the best cinematography.

The award for best director went to Salvador Calvo for his film “Adú”, Patricia López Arnaiz was honored as best leading actress for her role in the film “Ane” and Mario Casas received for his portrayal of the boy Dani in “No matarás” Best Actor Award.

The British production “The Father” by French director Florian Zeller, who had also written the previous play of the same name, was honored as the best European film.

"El olvido que seremos" by Fernando Trueba from Colombia received the award for best Ibero-American film.

Superstar Antonio Banderas hosted the gala evening in his southern Spanish hometown.

The award ceremony, which hundreds of guests attended last year shortly before the start of the pandemic, took place only online this time.

Apart from Banderas, only the singer and actress Ángela Molina (65), who received the Goya Honorary Prize for her life's work, and the personalities who symbolically presented the prizes to the artists connected via the Internet, were present personally.

The award for the best film was presented by the nurse Ana María Ruiz, in recognition of the work of all healthcare workers during the pandemic.
