Dortmund (dpa) - According to Borussia Dortmund's managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, giving people different ideas in times of Corona is currently the most important function of football.

"The most important thing is that football brings people a bit of joy and variety at the moment," said the 61-year-old TV broadcaster Sky before the top game at Bayern on Saturday.

Watzke emphasized that he was convinced that the current games also contribute a lot.

Even health expert Karl Lauterbach (SPD) assured him that he now sees the ghost games uncritically.

When the game was resumed in May of the previous year, there had been heated discussions about preferring football.

Also in view of the continuing travel activity of professional footballers for European Cups and international matches, there was debate as to whether football in lockdown was the wrong model.

"I think that the current games also do a lot to give people a bit of variety," said Watzke.

It is important that, thanks to football, people have things "that they can also talk about, be happy about or even mourn along the way," added the BVB boss.

On the other hand, Watzke also warned: "Football must not get too high."

He is no better than society.

"We can't just act as role models all the time, because we do nonsense every now and then," explained Watzke.
