Berlin (dpa / bb) - Appointments for a Covid 19 vaccination with the active ingredient from Astrazeneca will also be given to people over 65 years of age in Berlin from Sunday.

The health administration announced on Saturday.

"The distinction made when booking between under and over 65-year-olds is no longer applicable, as the AstraZeneca vaccine is now also approved for over 65-year-old Berliners," the authority explained.

A vaccination is only possible after an invitation.

Many over 70-year-olds who now receive this would have the opportunity to book a timely Astrazeneca appointment, it said.

The same applies to 65 to 70 year olds with certain chronic diseases.

"It is good that we can now offer an earlier vaccination," said Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD).

"I urge everyone who receives an invitation to be vaccinated to accept it and be vaccinated."

Astrazeneca will be administered in the vaccination center in the former Tegel Airport and, from next week on, also in the former Tempelhof Airport.

Vaccinations should also start in doctors' offices in the coming week.

The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians assumes that Astrazeneca will also be used there initially.
