  The Sustainability Department and Senior Minister of State for Transportation Xu Lianzhen pointed out during the debate on the expenditure budget of the Sustainability Department at the Congressional Appropriations Committee on March 4 that the "Hawker Center Transformation Plan" will focus on ensuring a clean and safe environment in the hawker center, such as improving the aisles and table settings.   She said: "We will also strengthen the application of technology, support the digitalization of hawker centers, and install sensors to monitor the flow of people and help with maintenance work."

  The "Hawker Center Transformation Plan" will be gradually implemented to newly built and rebuilt hawker centers.

  The hawker inheritance plan aimed at continuing the hawker culture will be launched this year. Hawkers who intend to retire can pass on their cooking skills to novice hawkers through the plan.

  Three new hawker centres will be opened this year and early next year. Bukit Kambala hawker centre, Fenville hawker centre and market are expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year, and Suga hawker centre is expected to open early next year.

  Xu Lianzhen said that the new hawker centers will be operated as a social enterprise to help hawkers compete in the catering industry.
