Wilhelmshaven (AP) - The German naval ship "Berlin" is setting out today (4:00 p.m.) for an EU mission to monitor the arms embargo against Libya in the Mediterranean.

The around 220 soldiers start their missions abroad from the naval base in Wilhelmshaven and will be deployed for around four months, as the navy announced.

Together with Lithuanian soldiers who are also on board, the troops are supposed to control cargo ships that are on their way to Libya in the Mediterranean.

The more than 170 meter long task force provider is expected at its destination in the Mediterranean in mid-March.

Most recently, from August to December of last year, the Bundeswehr took part in the EU operation “Irini” with a ship.

The goals of «Irini» are to stabilize Libya, a civil war country in North Africa, and to support the UN-led political peace process.

In addition to arms smuggling, it is also supposed to prevent oil smuggling.
