Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - It is an installation in memory of the victims of right-wing violence in Germany: In the inner courtyard of the Saarbrücken city gallery, 21 light boxes with the names of people who were victims of racist attacks have been lit since Friday.

The reason for Natascha Sadr Haghighian's art project was the attack in Hanau, in which a right-wing extremist assassin killed nine Hanau citizens just over a year ago, the Saarbrücken City Gallery announced.

The names of the Hanau victims are all legible during the installation.

Among other things, Samuel Yeboah from Ghana, who was killed in Saarlouis in September 1991, and the Hessian government president Walter Lübcke, who was shot in front of his house in June 2019, are remembered.

There are also names of victims of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) who were murdered in various German cities between 2000 and 2006.

Under the motto #Saytheirnames (Says their names) the installation aims to focus on the victims of attacks.

Because it is often the case that the perpetrators are in the center of attention, and the victims and their relatives take a back seat, it said.

The boxes are colored in spectral colors, while the names are white.

"It is a list that is painfully long, and yet has to remain incomplete because there is not enough space," said the city gallery.

The Amadeu Antonio Foundation has counted at least 213 victims of right-wing violence since 1990. The installation can now be seen in the courtyard of the city gallery every day from 11 a.m. until sunset.
