Despite the new CO2 taxes, household energy and fuel prices were still 1.3 percent lower than a year ago.

Heating oil (minus 6.9 percent), district heating (minus 5.1 percent) and electricity (minus 2.1 percent) were also cheaper year-on-year.

From January to February, however, fuel prices rose by 1.3 percent.

Heating oil rose by 8.1 percent within a month.

After the VAT cut expired at the end of 2020, inflation had already jumped in January.

In addition, a CO2 tax of 25 euros per tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted was introduced at the beginning of 2021.

Among other things, CO2 is produced when diesel, gasoline, heating oil and natural gas are burned.
