Gelsenkirchen (dpa / lnw) - Around 60 percent of all train stations in the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) are in a "bad condition", according to an investigation by the VRR.

This emerges from the 14th station report published on Thursday, which is created annually.

The quality of stay, passenger information and accessibility at the 294 train stations and train stops in the VRR were evaluated.

23 stations received the rating “excellent”, and another 97 received a “decent” overall rating.

The testers rated 159 stations as “in need of development”, 15 were “intolerable” from the testers' point of view.

The majority of the stations are therefore in an "unsatisfactory state".

Above all, the quality of stay has led to poor ratings at numerous train stations, judged the VRR.

In particular, garbage, graffiti and other pollution as well as structural defects were found.

"In order to improve the situation in the interests of the passengers, the railway infrastructure operators should clean and maintain the stations more intensively," demanded VRR board spokesman Ronald RF Lünser.

The testers rated the information provided by passengers largely as good.

Almost 95 percent of the stations achieved satisfactory to excellent ratings.

When it comes to accessibility, the VRR still sees a lot of room for improvement: At 60 percent of all stations, customers can use elevators or ramps to get to the platforms and into the vehicles step-free.

At the remaining 40 percent of the breakpoints, however, there is an increased or very high need for action.
