Ostia (dpa) - Water polo record champion Spandau 04 said goodbye to the second Champions League tournament with another strong performance.

The Berliners missed the 8: 8 (2: 3, 3: 0, 2: 4, 1: 1) against Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday by 14 seconds.

Only in the final phase did Spandau receive compensation in the fourth match within four days.

The Bundesliga team closed the main round group A tournament in Ostia with one win, two draws and a narrow defeat.

“Hardly anyone thought we would do that before the tournament.

It was an important experience for your own self-esteem.

So we can still play water polo, ”said manager Peter Röhle, commenting on the appearance of the water lovers.

In the table of the group, Spandau remains tied with CN Marseille fifth of six teams with seven points, but has the third Piraeus (10) in view again in Ostia before the final tournament in April.

The top 4 of the sextet will move into Final 8 in Hannover at the beginning of June.

The game against Piraeus was changeable.

Olympiakos led 2-0, but Spandau equalized and turned the match to 5-3 by the break.

At the beginning of the third quarter Denis Strelezkij even managed to make it 6: 3, but then the Greeks went 4-0.

The four-time Spandau goalscorer Nikola Dedovic equalized to 7: 7.

In the final quarter, Lucas Gielen made it 8: 7 four minutes before the end of the day, but the American Hannes Peter Daube in the service of Piraeus prevented Spandau's victory.

“It's a shame, a success would have been a nice end to our performances, where we almost improved from game to game.

That is encouraging, ”said Röhle.
