Münster (dpa / lnw) - Unknown shot at two moving cars on the autobahn near Ahaus.

In both cases, the two inmates on the A31 were unharmed, as the police and public prosecutor's office in Münster announced on Thursday.

A couple was sitting in a vehicle that was heading towards Emden, on the opposite side a car with another couple was driving towards Oberhausen when the shots rang out.

The occupants of both cars suddenly felt a thud, the side window of one vehicle had splintered and the passenger window of the other.

"We assume that the vehicle windows were destroyed by targeted firing," said the homicide squad.

The perpetrators had "at least accepted the death of the inmates" through their actions.

The investigators are looking for witnesses, mainly two young adults who are said to have been on a pedestrian bridge on the highway with bicycles and backpacks on Wednesday afternoon at the time of the crime.
