Berlin / Bonn (dpa) - Keep your distance and relax - that works particularly well in your own garden at the moment.

But while allotment gardens cannot find tenants in many sparsely populated regions and clubs are struggling with vacancies, the waiting lists for plots are literally exploding in large cities.

So-called rental gardens are increasingly an alternative for hobby gardeners: Completely prepared plots in fields where they only have to hoe, weed and harvest.

Here, too, demand is increasing: “There are around 2,500 people on our waiting list,” says the Berlin farmer Max von Grafenstein from “bauerngarten”.

He rents out a total of 900 parcels at four locations in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Other providers such as the “tegut seasonal gardens” in Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia as well as “my harvest”, represented in 21 cities across Germany, are registering increased demand and expanding their capacities.

But there are also opportunities for gardening enthusiasts without any property.

The Berlin allotment gardener and gardening blogger Caroline Engwert has just published her “Indoor Harvest” guide on gardening without a garden.

"You can also successfully grow salads, herbs and easy-care vegetables in your room," says Engwert.

Not even a balcony is necessary for this.
