Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (dpa / lrs) - About three weeks earlier than last year, the first new potatoes of the season began to be planted in the southwest.

The early spring weather will ensure that the 280 producers of the "Palatinate Grumberry" can start planting, announced the Palatinate Grumberry Growers' Association on Thursday in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

In the main cultivation area between Speyer and Gimbsheim north of Worms, the planters would do their rounds in many fields.

With 4,000 hectares, the area is at the previous year's level.

The Vorderpfalz is the largest growing region for new potatoes in Germany.
