Guatemala City (dpa) - The Pacaya volcano in Guatemala has again spewed lava, steam and ash.

The activity was very high, said the civil protection of the Central American country on Wednesday according to local time.

According to this, strong explosions were registered that reached up to 800 meters above the crater.

In addition, an ash column about a kilometer high had formed over the mountain, said the national volcanological institute.

The ashes fall on neighboring towns and can even reach distances of up to 175 kilometers, the authorities estimated.

There was initially no information on evacuations or injuries.

Guatemala's volcanological institute posted videos and photos of the Pacaya on Twitter, showing lava flowing down the 2,552-meter-high mountain.

On the south-eastern flank of the volcano there are three 800 to 1000 meter long streams, it said in a message.

The agency warned that the volcano's activity could continue to increase.

Residents of the mountain, which is around 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City, were called on to be vigilant and to leave their homes if there was increased danger.
