It was first of all an unusual bustle, in the middle of the school holidays, that attracted attention.

And when the gendarmes learned what was happening in the Turkish Cultural Center of Neufchâteau, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, they immediately alerted the prefecture.

Last Thursday, the soldiers discovered that about twenty boarders, girls aged 10 to 17, had been staying in the religious establishment since the beginning of the week, for a sort of summer camp, supervised by animators presented as volunteers.

The prefect of the Vosges therefore issued a decree on Friday to put an end to this stay, totally prohibited given the health context.

For its part, the justice has not yet opened a criminal investigation.

A structure already in the sights of the authorities

This case arises within a structure already in the crosshairs of the authorities for several months, according to information collected by Europe 1. Several administrative infringements were reported there during various controls carried out at the end of 2020. In addition, the sources of financing of the association in charge of the site would raise questions, in particular recent work to rehabilitate a boarding school for girls.

This work would have been carried out thanks to donations, according to the explanations provided to the authorities by the association officials.

This boarding school was supposed to be closed last December, when a check revealed that a teenage girl was staying there.
