It is not uncommon for there to be lots of avalanches in the Kiruna mountains at this time of year.

But according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, they are unusually large this year.

Some up to several hundred meters wide.

- Last week we observed an avalanche with a depth of ten meters.

It could have buried a train carriage, says Jenny Råghall, avalanche expert and area manager for Kebnekaise's avalanche forecasts.

Reinforces the avalanche danger warning

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's avalanche forecasts have previously stated that there is a great avalanche danger in the mountains around Kebnekaise, Abisko and Riksgränsen.

But now they want to reinforce the warning by issuing a special warning.

- The special warning is for everyone who plans to stay in the area, such as skiers and snowmobiles.

The reason is that it is such dangerous conditions in combination with good weather.

This means that you do not think it is so dangerous.

Cause: Poor pre-season and storm

The reason why there are a lot of - and unusually large - avalanches is the snow-poor pre-season which created a thin blanket of snow and then a storm on it.

In Tarfala, for example, it has blown up to 48 meters per second.

On the night before Wednesday, several large avalanches were triggered above Kebnekaise's mountain station.

However, the avalanches never reached and no one was injured.

Is there any risk for those who work and stay at the mountain station?

- It was placed there based on the fact that there should be no avalanches there.

There have been equally large avalanches there before, so there is a basic idea with the station's location, says Jenny Råghall, avalanche expert and area manager for Kebnekaise's avalanche forecasts.
