Berlin (dpa) - Concerned about the next corona wave, Berlin's Charité University Hospital is urging accelerated vaccination against Covid-19.

"We urgently need to shift into turbo gear if we want to prevent a third wave," said Martin Kreis, the board member responsible for health care, on Thursday.

He called for family doctors to be included in vaccination planning and logistics.

"They are on site, there is established communication, they know their patients, they have a close, often years-long, trusting relationship."

Kreis also spoke out in favor of at least exhausting the maximum vaccination intervals between the first and second dose.

A first vaccination already protects very well against a severe course of Covid-19.

In Berlin, the Charité primarily cares for those affected with severe disease and ran an emergency program from mid-December to the end of January to cope with the number of patients.

Intensive care physicians fear that after loosening, there will be a significant increase in new infections and then a high level of stress on the clinics.

According to the decision of the federal and state governments, there should be regulations from the second week of March so that individual doctors in private practice can also vaccinate people against corona.

From the end of March / beginning of April, the general practitioners and specialists are to participate in the vaccination and also decide on the prioritization on site.
