Trier (dpa / lrs) - Around three and a half years after the dissolution of the Cistercian convent in the Himmerod monastery in the Eifel, the Trier bishop Stephan Ackermann presented new plans for the facility on Thursday.

"The plans for the future of the Himmerod monastery are becoming more concrete," said the Trier diocese.

No successor order had been found last November.

According to earlier information from the Diocese of Trier, the search was aimed at "preserving the character of the former Cistercian abbey as a spiritual place".

The Cistercians withdrew from the monastery near Großlittgen in October 2017 because of the small number of monks and a tense financial situation.

The monastery was founded in 1134 by the Cistercian monk Bernhard von Clairvaux.

The monastery is owned by a sponsoring association of which the Trier diocese with around 1.3 million Catholics in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland is a member.
