Dresden (dpa / sn) - In the new corona ordinance for Saxony, Augustusburg and Oberwiesenthal are to be defined as model cities for careful opening steps in tourism.

This was announced by the responsible minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) on Wednesday at a press conference on the occasion of the International Tourism Exchange (ITB).

Saxony will appear as the “Official Culture Destination” at the digital travel fair from March 9th to 12th.

As Klepsch went on to say, concepts are also being developed in Chemnitz and Dresden that should enable cultural and leisure facilities to be gradually opened up.

Opening strategies would be needed that take into account the respective infection process as well as the progress with vaccinations, tests and other hygiene measures.

Above all, it will be about enabling safe contacts.

“Saxony's presence at the ITB is an essential step on the way to a new start in tourism in Saxony, in order to quickly stimulate tourism again after the lockdown and to increasingly position Saxony as an attractive travel destination in Germany and around the world,” said Klepsch.

A look at the tourism figures for Saxony 2020 in a national comparison shows that consistent and continuous tourism advertising pays off.

With a decrease of 34.9 percent in overnight stays from January to December, Saxony got off significantly better than the majority of the federal states.

Veronika Hiebl, Managing Director of the Tourismus Marketing Gesellschaft Sachsen (TMGS), expects the holiday trend in Germany to continue this year.

"This is a highly competitive market in which Saxony has to assert itself," she said.

In this context, TMGS is primarily focusing on expanding the options for online bookings for smaller businesses in rural areas.

The visibility of the accommodations on the online travel market is an important prerequisite for successful marketing.
