El Alto (dpa) - In a tumult in a university in Bolivia, at least six students were killed after falling from the fifth floor.

Three had died directly at the scene of the accident, three more died of serious injuries in the hospital, as police chief Jhonny Aguilera said, according to a report in the newspaper "La Razón".

Five other students were injured, some seriously.

At first there was talk of seven dead.

The young people fell almost 17 meters on Tuesday when a railing gave way amid scuffles at a meeting at the Public University of El Alto (UPEA).

The university expressed condolences to the families of the victims and ordered a seven-day mourning period.

Ombudsman Nadia Cruz called for a full investigation into the accident.

According to local media reports, after a gathering of students there had been an argument with fights and scuffles.

A video of the incident showed how numerous students push and pull each other in the hallway.

As the crowd began to move, the railing towards the university courtyard gave way and the young people fell down.

Prosecutors said three students who had called the meeting were arrested.

She is being investigated for murder and grievous bodily harm.
