Berlin (dpa) - In the corona pandemic, people in Germany often switched to their own cars and, above all, to bicycles.

This was the result of a representative survey by the Bitkom digital association.

Nine out of ten respondents (86 percent) tried to avoid means of transport with many passengers.

According to the Bitkom study, 7 out of 10 citizens (70 percent) have generally restricted their mobility as a result of the corona pandemic.

37 percent are less on the road, a further 33 percent even a lot less.

The biggest loser among modes of transport in the pandemic is the airplane.

92 percent of those surveyed say that they flew less often during the Corona crisis.

The figures for local public transport are less drastic: 58 percent of users of buses and trains in local transport state that they have used these means of transport less.

In long-distance transport, the proportion is 55 percent.

Taxis also recorded a significant decline (55 percent).

In contrast, the bottom line was that private cars and, above all, bicycles increased despite the overall decline in mobility: 26 percent used their own car less often, but 31 percent used it more often.

And the bicycle is experiencing a real boom during Corona: Although 12 percent of people have ridden their bikes less often, 38 percent have used it more often since the beginning of the pandemic.

Satisfaction with public transport depends on where you live.

Two-thirds (65 percent) of the residents of a large city are satisfied with the offer.

In a medium-sized city the value drops to 46 percent, in a small town to 43 percent.

In rural areas, only one in four respondents (25 percent) is satisfied with the offer.

New mobility offers such as ride pooling and ride hailing have a good reputation, but so far have only rarely been used - also because they are often only offered in large cities.

With ride pooling, the provider creates computer-assisted car pools from customers who have a similar goal.

80 percent are positive about this, but only 9 percent use services such as Moia or Berlköing frequently.

With ride hailing, for example Uber, the customer books a car with a driver via an app.

The approval rate here is 69 percent, but the rate of frequent use is only 8 percent.

However, both mobility variants have great potential: 56 percent of those surveyed who have not yet been able to use ride pooling say that they are interested in such an offer.

47 percent are interested in ride hailing.
