  • European and American heads of state who "deliberately try to reduce the population" of the world?

These are the comments attributed to Vladimir Putin in a viral video.

  • If the images are indeed from a speech given by the Russian president in 2016, the accompanying captions are false.

Over 33,000 views for a deceptive video on Vladimir Putin.

This montage diverts a speech by the Russian president in front of the military.

The head of state is said to have issued a warning to "world leaders", saying that they "are deliberately trying to reduce the population" of the world.

“America and Europe, if you don't end your plans, you will have to face not only God's wrath, but mine as well,” read the video's subtitles.

Fake captions were added to this 2016 speech by Vladimir Putin.

FAKE OFF

These images come from a speech Vladimir Putin gave on May 9, 2016 at a ceremony in Moscow commemorating the end of World War II, known in Russia as the “Great Patriotic War”.

But the Russian president did not make the remarks attributed to him in the viral video, which is a montage of excerpts from this speech.

This is what Vladimir Putin says in these excerpts: “Dear Russian citizens and esteemed veterans, soldiers and sailors, sergeants and master sergeants, warrant officers and chief warrant officers, officers, generals and admirals.

[…] Congratulations on this Victory Day!

[…] This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War.

[…] Today, civilization is again confronted with cruelty and violence: terrorism has become a global threat.

We must overcome this evil.

[…] [The descendants of the veterans] do not let them down and will always have regard for the Great Victory, [and] the act of a generation of heroic conquerors!

Congratulations on this anniversary of the Great Victory!

Hooray!

"

The transcript of Vladimir Putin's full speech is available in English and Russian on the Kremlin website.

The deceptive video montage, which has been broadcast since at least 2016, has also been widely shared in Latin America, as our colleagues from AFP remind us.

The coronavirus health crisis was able to give it a second wind.
