Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) emphasized the special importance of the consultations at the beginning of the negotiations with the prime ministers of the federal states about possible easing of the month-long corona lockdown.

It was an "important day," said Merkel on Wednesday, according to information from the German Press Agency from participants at the beginning of the online consultations with the country chiefs.

She was quoted as saying, "We can transition into a new phase."

Before the big round, the prime ministers had discussed with each other in a separate round without Merkel.

In the crucial negotiations in the afternoon, it should be discussed how the pandemic containment will continue after the end of the lockdown, which is initially limited to March 7, and what prospects there are for easing the corona measures.

Last but not least, this depends on the options for regularly using corona quick and self-tests in the future.

According to participants, Merkel predicted a broad test strategy for April, May and June in front of the members of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag on Tuesday.

An updated draft resolution shows that easing is also being discussed for regions in which the seven-day incidence remains stable below 100.

In that case, there could then be, for example, restricted openings, particularly in the retail sector, with specific shopping dates.

In addition to such appointment shopping offers, museums, galleries, zoological and botanical gardens, among other things, could then be opened “for visitors who have booked an appointment in advance”.

According to reports, the draft resolution had not yet been approved in advance with all countries.

What is decided in the end is considered open.
