Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The parliamentary group leader of the SPD in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament, Thomas Kutschaty, has blamed the state government's failures for the likely failure of the Rhine-Ruhr region's bid for the 2032 Olympic Games.

"North Rhine-Westphalia did not do its homework with this application," said Kutschaty on Wednesday in a current hour of the state parliament.

The state government failed to have a feasibility study for the games drawn up in good time.

Efforts to bring the Games to North Rhine-Westphalia suffered a decisive setback last week when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared Brisbane, Australia, to be the preferred candidate.

NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) had criticized the early pre-determination on Brisbane: "We would have delivered everything that was needed if we had known that a decision would be made at such short notice."
