Isernhagen (dpa) - The uncertain fate of a coati with an amputated tail is currently occupying animal lovers in the Hanover region.

"We are investigating on suspicion of theft," said a police spokesman from Hanover on Wednesday.

Members of Wildtierhilfe Isernhagen had previously started a call for help on the Internet and informed about a break-in into the enclosure.

Several media outlets have reported on the case.

"After information from passers-by, we found the animal in a very poor condition on a military training area a few days ago," said club spokesman Justin Klemme.

A check at the vet showed that the animal's tail had been amputated shortly before.

"The wound was fresh and the surgical threads were still there," said Klemme.

The helpers were shocked when the enclosure was broken into at the end of last week and the protégé was stolen.

The animal urgently needs medical help, said Klemme.

The association has suspended a finder's fee on the Facebook platform.

The investigators hope that they will find the coati and rely on clues.

The amputation made it a very conspicuous animal, said the police spokesman.

The zookeepers believe that the coati was kept illegally because it did not have a chip.
