Munich (dpa / lby) - The Free State of Bavaria wants to double the financial donation to its sports and shooting clubs via the so-called club flat rate in 2021.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) announced on Wednesday in the interior committee of the state parliament that the cabinet would deal with a corresponding recommendation on Thursday.

There was broad approval across the political groups.

«We need sport for health, we need sport for social cohesion.

In this situation, it is right to help sport with taxpayers' money, ”said Herrmann.

According to statistics from the Bavarian State Sports Association, there are almost 12,000 sports clubs in Bavaria.

Bavaria had already increased the club flat rate from 20 to 40 million euros last year due to the particular burden on sports clubs due to the corona pandemic.

The sports and shooting clubs are currently suffering from membership losses and have to forego income from events, said Herrmann.
