RB Leipzig beat Wolfsburg 2-0 on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the German Cup, where they become the logical favorites in the absence of Bayern, the defending champion eliminated in the round of 16.

Yussuf Poulsen (63rd) Hwang-Chan (88th) twice cracked the defense of Wolfsburg, third in the Bundesliga, who remained in eight consecutive matches without conceding a goal.

Leipzig, which still has no title to its name since its accession to the first division in 2016, remains in the race for the double this season.

RB is indeed in second position in the Bundesliga, just two points behind Bayern.

"It was a committed match, the guys fought to the end," said RB coach Julian Nagelsmann, "but before talking about the title dream, we'll have to make a good half final, and if we go to Berlin (for the final on May 13, editor's note) we can talk about the rest ”.

The other qualified for the semi-finals are Borussia Dortmund, Tuesday winner of Mönchengladbach (1-0), and Holstein Kiel, the D2 team which eliminated Bayern in January.

The last scheduled shift between Jahn Regensburg (D2) and Werder Bremen was postponed sine die after the detection of eight cases of Covid-19 in the Regensburg group.

Between Leipzig and Wolfsburg, the two best defenses in the Bundesliga (respectively 20 and 19 goals conceded in 23 days), one should not expect a fireworks display from the gunners.

But the two teams have nevertheless provided great opportunities.

From the 12th minute, French international hopeful Christopher Nkunku had a golden bullet to his head, one meter from the goal line, and it took an extra-terrestrial save from Belgian Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels , to prevent the opening of the score.

Wolfsburg then had his highlight and Wout Weghorst, the home scorer of Wolfsburg (14 Bundesliga goals), missed a penalty when his supporting foot slipped on the grassy lawn (25th).

Poulsen, the Danish international from Leipzig, ended up unblocking the situation on the hour mark (63rd).

Served in the race by Alexander Sörloth, he took speed several defenders of Wolfsburg to come to align Casteels, taking advantage of a light against Maxence Lacroix who deflected the ball.

The two teams then had their chance to come back or kill the match and it was finally the South Korean Hwang Hee-Chan who ended the suspense (88th), two minutes from the end of regulation time (2- 0).
