Schwerin / Berlin (dpa / mv) - Top politicians of the AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have sharply criticized the nationwide classification of their party as a suspected right-wing extremist case.

“The decision by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is scandalous, politically motivated and an attack on democracy in Germany.

Obviously, it is all about defaming and politically damaging the largest opposition party and an unpleasant political competitor in the super election year 2021 shortly before two important state elections, ”said the state chairman of the AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Leif-Erik Holm, and the chairman of the AfD -Landtag parliamentary group, Nikolaus Kramer, in a joint communication on Wednesday.

The SPD and the Left, on the other hand, welcomed the move.

The spokesman against right-wing extremism of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament, Julian Barlen, praised: "The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is finally creating clarity in the AfD case."

Germany in particular must be very vigilant about upholding the constitutional principles and fending off attacks on democracy before it is too late.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the supporters of the formally dissolved right-wing extremist "wing" of the AfD are not only isolated, but are represented "very broadly and in front in the state parliament".

The AfD is the political arm of hatred, exclusion and division.

The domestic political spokesman for the left parliamentary group in the state parliament, Peter Ritter, said that the AfD's classification as a suspected case did not surprise him.

The question is, however, what new findings this classification by the protection of the constitution should bring.

"We know enough from the NSU complex that measures for" observation projects "contributed little or nothing to the investigation."

From the point of view of the AfD, however, it is a “targeted denigration of the opposition”, which has a system and is unworthy of a free democracy.

Holm and Kramer announced that the AfD would defend itself against the decision with all legal means.

With the classification as a right-wing extremist suspected case, the party can now also be spied on using intelligence services.

According to information from the German Press Agency, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, informed the state offices for the protection of the constitution on Wednesday in an internal video conference.

First, the «Spiegel» reported on the decision.
