Wuppertal (dpa) - Three years after the acid attack on energy manager Bernhard Günther, the investigations are ongoing.

This was announced by a spokeswoman for the Wuppertal public prosecutor's office on a dpa request.

Two strangers attacked Günther on March 4, 2018 after jogging near his home in Haan near Düsseldorf and poured highly concentrated acid over him.

Günther suffered severe head injuries.

The perpetrators have not yet been identified.

Although a suspect was arrested in October 2019, he was released after about four weeks, among other things because a DNA test had exonerated him.

At the time of the crime, Günther was chief financial officer of the RWE subsidiary Innogy, which was later taken over by Eon.

He has since left the company.

Innogy offered a reward of 100,000 euros.

In an interview, Günther was convinced that the motive behind the crime lay in the “professional environment”.

A few days after the attack on Günther, it became known that the RWE subsidiary Innogy was to be broken up and parts of the competitor Eon were to be taken over.

The takeover offer from Eon accelerated his return to work, Günther said.
