Hamm (dpa) - Due to corona infections, numerous employees at the meat processing company Westfleisch are in quarantine.

In the daily tests of all employees in the past two weeks at the 1000-employee plant in Hamm-Uentrop, 31 infections were found, Westfleisch announced on Wednesday evening in Münster.

Those who tested positive were isolated and all housed in separate accommodation.

They are in close contact with the city of Hamm to prevent further spread.

The West German Broadcasting Corporation had previously reported.

Cattle and pigs are slaughtered and cut up at the plant.

In addition to the infected, according to the company, 63 first-degree contact persons were quarantined - this is officially required.

A further 85 employees are also quarantined, although they do not have to be - this as a "pure precautionary measure," according to the company.

So a total of 179 people were quarantined.

Westfleisch and the competitor Tönnies caused a sensation last year with larger corona outbreaks, which earned them sharp criticism of the working conditions.

After that, the companies put on extensive tests.
