Hardly any movement on the Hamburg labor market: the number of unemployed remained almost the same in February.

Compared to January, "the labor market is moving sideways, it hardly changes, only increasing by 29 people to 86,962," said the head of the Hamburg Employment Agency, Sönke Fock, on Tuesday.

Compared to the same month last year, however, the number of unemployed increased significantly by 19,252 or 28.4 percent.

The unemployment rate remains at 8.1 percent, but is 1.7 points higher than in February a year ago.

The cut-off date for the survey of the labor market figures was February 11th.

Long-term unemployed are particularly hard hit by the Corona crisis in Hamburg.

Their share of all women and men without a job rose by 60 percent to 26,832 within one year.

This was followed by those over 50, with an increase of 30.1 percent to 24,759.

Even among those under 25, the number of unemployed in the Corona year rose by an above-average 30 percent to 7,292.

Foreigners (plus 26.5), unskilled or semi-skilled workers (plus 26 percent) and single parents (plus 23.6) remained slightly below the overall increase of 28.4 percent.

According to the information, the number of all employees subject to social security contributions fell within one year by 5100 or 0.5 percent to 1,009,500.

Compared to the previous month, the number fell by 4,500 or 0.4 percent.

While there were up to 4.2 percent more jobs in healthcare, administration and social security, education and construction, other areas suffered losses.

Almost 4,700 applications for short-time work

According to the information, this mainly affected the catering industry with a decline of 11.8 percent or 4800 employees within one year.

But also the temporary employment, the service sector and the manufacturing industry lost jobs.

Because of the second lockdown, another 4,694 applications for short-time work were received between December and February.

"Since the start of the corona pandemic in Hamburg in mid-March 2020, a total of 31,372 Hamburg companies or departments have reported their short-time work for 443,935 employees," said Fock.

In fact, however, significantly fewer companies have used the instrument of job security.

According to the most recent data available in August, almost 25,000 companies reported short-time work for more than 375,000 employees, but only around 9,500 companies for a good 100,000 employees actually made use of the short-time work allowance.
