Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - According to Education Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP), teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia are to be trained more in the field of digitization in the future.

"We have provided all schools with an advanced training budget of EUR 1000, as well as an educational day for advanced training in the field of digitization," Gebauer told the "Kölner Stadtanzeiger" (Tuesday).

In addition, a total of 18 million euros would be used for the digital education offensive.

According to the Ministry of Education, there were around 4,900 public schools in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 2019/20 school year.

Digitization is high on their agenda, but you also have to know the conditions, said Gebauer.

“We have around 200,000 teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia, a third of whom are over 50 years of age.

People who did not grow up with digitization. "

Only since 2016 have there been requirements in the training regulations that provide for a mandatory module for digitization.

In addition, according to the minister, all schools should be connected to an efficient network by the end of 2022.

In 2017 this was the case for 13 percent of schools, and at the end of 2020 for more than 60 percent.

In a representative forsa survey in November, school principals named the lack of digitalization as one of the biggest problems in the pandemic - i.e. too few devices and difficulties in connection with online teaching.

Wibke Poth, deputy chairwoman of the Association of Education and Upbringing (VBE) in North Rhine-Westphalia, said in January that the topic of digitization had been "overslept for years".

If a student can only take part in digital lessons via mobile phone, that is of course not satisfactory.
