Darmstadt (dpa) - Four men are said to have illegally distributed cannabis flowers in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.

As the police in southern Hesse announced on Tuesday, the flowers were sold via vending machines that also offered so-called CBD products.

The machines were located in southern Hesse, in the Hochtaunus district and in the Rhineland-Palatinate towns of Wöllstein and Gau-Bickelheim (Alzey-Worms district).

CBD is the short form of cannabinol and, in contrast to the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is considered non-intoxicating.

As a spokesman for the Darmstadt public prosecutor said on Tuesday, cannabis-containing products may not be allowed even if they do not contain THC.

Three 30, 35 and 39-year-old men from Darmstadt and a 32-year-old suspect from Bensheim (Bergstrasse district) are being investigated.

Previously, the authorities had unsuccessfully demanded that the providers remove the controversial cannabis products from their range.

The officers searched residential and business premises and, among other things, seized more than 3,700 cannabis flowers.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) is now investigating whether the flowers that have been seized contain psychoactive THC.
