The accident took place shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

A collision between an overloaded vehicle and a heavy truck left at least fifteen dead Tuesday morning in southern California, near the city of El Centro, on the border with Mexico, announced a hospital which received a part of the accident victims.

"We believe there were 27 passengers in the SUV that crashed into a semi-trailer full of gravel," said Judy Cruz, emergency manager at El Centro medical center, near the Mexican border.

According to her, at least 14 passengers died at the crash site and another after being taken to hospital.

On images from the KVOA chain, we can see a Ford Expedition, designed for a maximum of eight passengers, completely stamped on the driver's side by the semi-trailer.

Authorities did not give details of the identity of the victims.
