Stralsund / Greifswald (dpa / mv) - Young environmental activists have called for the preservation of a forest in Stralsund, which should give way to apartments, a day care center and a supermarket with a parking lot.

A video published on Monday on the Internet shows how activists climb a tree and speak out against the clearing: "The forestry office has determined that the forest may not be cleared according to the state forest protection law," said one of the activists.

Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) simply ignored it.

Backhaus came under fire after the media reported his support for the project last week.

The activists called on the Stralsund citizens to prevent the clearing.

In Greifswald, activists continued to wait on Monday on a linden tree in the Steinbeck suburb that they had occupied a week ago.

They wanted to demonstrate against the clearing of the tree for a building project and against gentrification, i.e. the displacement of poorer sections of the population from certain parts of the city by the influx of more affluent people.

The construction project was on the agenda for a citizenship meeting on Monday evening.

According to the city, however, the possibilities to influence are limited.
