Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Great Synagogue in Erfurt, which was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1938, can be experienced virtually again.

The former center of Jewish culture should in future be reconstructed with the help of virtual reality glasses, the state capital announced on Monday.

The interactive project is part of the theme year "Nine Centuries of Jewish Life in Thuringia" and brings a time of new beginnings 150 years ago to life in Erfurt.

With this virtual reconstruction, one of the destroyed synagogues in Thuringia can be explored for the first time.

The Great Synagogue, consecrated in 1884, comes to life again in front of the viewer with the help of VR glasses and hand controllers.

According to the information, the building, the furnishings and important objects of Jewish life will be transferred to an interactive room.

This can then be individually discovered in its original size.

Additional information offers should explain historical contexts, but also rites and customs of Jewish life in and around a synagogue.

The virtual reality application will be presented to the public on the European Day of Jewish Culture on September 5th in the Small Synagogue in Erfurt.

Visitors and guests of the Jewish state community can then use the VR glasses.
