Koblenz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate state investigation office found a corona transmission risk of an average of 1.3 percent in a study at schools and daycare centers in the state.

"This comparatively low risk suggests that the measures taken so far are effective," says the study published on Monday.

The number may even be lower, as the study cannot distinguish between transmissions at school and during leisure time.

How the spread of virus variants will affect the risk of transmission must be shown in a continuation of the investigation.

Since the end of the summer holidays in Rhineland-Palatinate, a team led by epidemiologists from the State Investigation Office (LUA) has been investigating how many more infections a corona case at schools and daycare centers entails on average.

Between September and December, 360 independent Covid-19 first cases (“index cases”) in schools and daycare centers did not cause any follow-up cases in their facilities, while 81 of 441 index cases led to 196 follow-up cases.

With reference to 14,591 identified contact persons, this corresponds to an infection risk of 1.34 percent, said the LUA.

The study also came to the conclusion that the risk of transmission depends very much on the type of institution and the role of the index case.

It has been shown that infections among caregivers in day-care centers cause significantly more secondary cases on average than cases in children in day-care centers and schools.

The data also showed that kindergarten teachers were a particular risk for their colleagues.

In contrast, it was a relatively rare occurrence for children to infect their teachers.
