Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Those in charge of the state capital have defended the «ban on staying» imposed on the Düsseldorf Rhine promenade due to the corona pandemic.

It has proven to be a very successful and appropriate means, one is very satisfied, said head of the regulatory affairs department Christian Zaum and city director Burkhard Hintzsche on Monday.

On the weekend before last, up to 700,000 people were in Düsseldorf on the Rhine.

Afterwards, the authorities were criticized for accepting the dense crowd.

Two thirds of the visitors to the Rhine promenade were foreigners.

Last weekend, the city had banned standing and sitting on the Rhine with the “no lingering” policy.

Walking and cycling, on the other hand, were allowed.

This is an appropriate measure compared to the alternative of cordoning off the banks of the Rhine and forbidding entry.

Last weekend, the city only had to impose an administrative offense against a particularly recalcitrant visitor to the banks of the Rhine who ignored all speeches by the security service because of the violation of the “no-stay ban”.

Violations of the mask requirement were punished more than 100 times.

On the previous weekend there were 230 violations.

This time the people were largely disciplined and insightful.

30 to 40 employees of the municipal security service were on duty per shift to check compliance with the rules.

The administrative court rejected an urgent application against the “no stay” on Friday.

On Monday, NRW Family Minister Joachim Stamp (FDP) said he saw the ban as "extremely critical".
