Berlin (dpa) - In the process of seven sexual attacks on young women in Berlin and Brandenburg, the defendant added his confession.

He wanted to spare the victims a testimony in court, said the alleged serial rapist on Monday through one of his defense lawyers.

All allegations of the prosecution are true, it said.

"I am very ashamed and I am aware of the guilt I have incurred."

He did not want to blame the acts on the influence of drugs, so the 30-year-old on the second day of the trial before the regional court of the capital.

The defendant is charged with six rape, one attempted rape, assault and attempted extortion.

The alleged perpetrator is said to have grabbed the women from behind, strangled them, threatened them with a screwdriver or knife, dragged them to remote areas and raped them.

In one case, the woman's cries for help, her violent resistance and the presence of a camper prevented the act from being completed.

For weeks in June and July 2020 reports of violent attacks on young women, predominantly in the southwest of Berlin, had caused great uncertainty and concern.

According to the indictment, the alleged perpetrator is said to have attacked seven young women between the ages of 14 and 27, mostly on remote routes.

Six acts are said to have occurred south of the Wannsee in Berlin and Brandenburg, one in Bernau.

A co-prosecution attorney, who represents one of the victims, had stated at the beginning of the trial on the sidelines of the hearing that it was “monstrous deeds”.

The accused is a "highly dangerous serial offender".

Initially, the 30-year-old had made a blanket confession after the indictment was read out.

In his statement, read out on the second day, he described his approach to every crime.

The trial will continue on March 22nd.
