Grenzach-Wyhlen (dpa) - During the corona pandemic, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche invested 490 million euros in German locations last year.

According to Monday, the money flowed into infrastructure and production facilities, especially in Mannheim and Penzberg in Upper Bavaria.

For example, Roche produces agents for corona tests there and fills them for worldwide deliveries.

The number of employees in Germany at the two locations and thus nationwide has increased by around 500 to 17,200.

As Claus Haberda, Managing Director of Roche Diagnostics GmbH, in Grenzach-Whylen near Basel said, Roche had invested 2.6 billion euros in German locations over the past five years.

The group is also represented in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart as well as in Potsdam and Berlin.

Total sales in Germany in 2020 were adjusted to 3.06 billion euros, 13 percent more than in the previous year.

The diagnostics division in particular has grown by 60 percent and is gradually replacing the old product portfolio, said Haberda.

Roche also announced that the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices has granted special approval for a corona self-test.

The Sars-CoV-2 antigen rapid test could also be used by laypeople at home with a nasal swab.

The test should be available in pharmacies and not require a prescription.

The first deliveries are planned for this week.

It is possible to provide tens of millions of pieces per month worldwide.
