Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's SPD parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh has welcomed the plans of the Federal SPD to campaign for a temporary rent moratorium.

The Berlin rent cap, which came into force around a year ago, is now a model for many other German cities.

"Here, too, there is a need for a moratorium on rent like we do in Berlin," Saleh told the German press agency on Monday.

"I think it's good that the Federal SPD is campaigning with the rent cap and is aiming for a rent moratorium."

There are numerous large cities in Germany in which people live in constant fear of being pushed out of their residential areas.

“What happens here in Berlin happens with a delay in other cities.

That is why it is wise to use our instrument to counter rising rents elsewhere in Germany, ”emphasized Saleh.

“The market just can't regulate everything.

By rejecting the rent cap, the CDU is opposing the interests of millions of tenants. "

The Federal SPD had announced for Monday afternoon that it would present its program for the federal election in September at an online press conference with the two party leaders Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans and Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz.

The controversial rent cover law, initially limited to 2025, came into force in Berlin on February 23, 2020.

This means that the rents for around 1.5 million apartments in Berlin are frozen at the June 2019 level.

They are only allowed to increase again from 2022 - according to the current status, by a maximum of 1.3 percent annually.

If an apartment is rented out again, the landlord must adhere to fixed upper limits and the last rent demanded.

Rents that are more than 20 percent above the upper limit are prohibited by law and must be reduced by the landlord.

After several lawsuits from the Berlin CDU and FDP, among others, the Federal Constitutional Court has to decide whether the law is legally tenable.

A precise date for this is not yet known, the decision is expected in the second quarter of the year.
