During the hearing, on December 8, the two representatives of the national financial prosecutor's office requested four years in prison, two of which were suspended against the three defendants.

As well as an additional penalty of prohibition to exercise the profession of lawyer for five years against Thierry Herzog.

“The Republic does not forget its presidents, if only because they make history.

Conversely, one cannot admit of a former president that he forgets the Republic… ”, Jean-Luc Blachon, the deputy prosecutor, had let go to the attention of Nicolas Sarkozy.

For her part, Jacqueline Laffont, the lawyer for the former head of state, had estimated, in her plea, that it was "impossible" to condemn her client, pointing to the emptiness of the file and "the absence obvious' evidence of the corruption pact.

Called to the bar one last time before the court withdrew to deliberate, Nicolas Sarkozy had indicated that he had "still confidence" in French justice.

“This affair has been a way of the cross for me.

But if that was the price to pay for the truth to work, I am ready to accept it.
